Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking is a Web-based service to share Internet page bookmarks (URLs); Web addresses are saved, tagged, and shared in a Web-based list format.

• Tagging is a large part of the effectiveness of social bookmarking. A tag is a keyword or descriptor / search term that is associated with a piece of information that describes and classifies the information included on the bookmarked page. Tags describe text, pictures, and other items on the pages so that others can search for them.

• Find people with related interests

Collaborative Annotation is the buzzword for a new concept in using social bookmarking in education.

• Google Bookmarks: https://www.google.com/bookmarks/ An excellent way to keep track of bookmarks, especially if you are already using other Google features.

• Diigo: This newish tool does quite a bit more than just collect bookmarks. You can do collaborative research, use "Sticky Notes" as well as collect and share bookmarks.

• Provide a list of bookmarks to your students for course material, research or assignments.
• Create a class research site that is informed by students contribution; assign groups
• Facilitate team projects addressing specific tags on the site.
